Why Yes, I do Like Raunchy R Rated Comedies

Hey kids,

I am enjoying a lovely bran muffin right now and I have to tell you it is absolutely delicious.  I don’t know why, but I figured you’d want to know.

Recently I went to see Bridesmaids along with me lovely wife.  After the obligatory purchase of the tickets we went inside and were met by the ticket taker guy.  For our purposes today we will call the ticket taker guy Carl.  He took the tickets (that’s his job) and as he tore them and handed back the stubs (which I still have) he said the following to me:

“Bridesmaids?  I guess she’s making you go see that, huh?”

Then I looked at Donna and she looked at me and then we both started laughing as Donna told him it was actually my idea, not hers.  Carl was immediately taken aback and had quite the shocked expression on his face.  Then he kind of gave me a funny look and said “oh, okay then”.

Carl did not offend me, but I did find his reaction to be very curious.  The only explanation that I could think of was that Carl was one of those “man’s man” guys and found it repulsive that I would see a movie about a bunch of women.  Maybe Carl had not seen the film yet and was under the impression that it was just a standard chick flick.  Not that that would have stopped me from going as I like those movies anyway, if they are done well.  But the key point is that Carl does not know me and he was making a judgment based on nothing more than I happen to be a guy.  Why is that necessary?

You see if Carl knew me he would know that I like raunchy, R rated comedies.  I enjoyed all of the American Pie films, Superbad, The Hangover and now The Hangover Part II.  He would also know that I like women and seeing a movie filled with women in a theatre full of women is probably one of the manliest things a guy can do.  If he knew me he would also know that (as I mentioned earlier) I like chick flicks.  Throw J Lo in a movie and have her pout about not finding a man and I’ll watch it.  Jennifer Aniston in the same role over and over again?  Not a problem.  I’ll watch it.  Poor Carl.  Now I feel sorry for him for not having more of an open mind.  Poor Carl.

It’s funny too that I once knew some people that refused to ever see an R rated film no matter what the reason was for the rating.  Too me that is just plain stupid and again, closed minded.  There’s a whole world out there that people like this will never see and I’m not just talking about missing good films.  These people are missing life too if they think seeing an R rated film will harm them in any way.  The King’s Speech was rated R and it was a great film.  You can’t tell me that anyone would be detrimentally harmed by taking in that film.  There’s a serious problem with the ratings system as it is and while I am not going to delve into that today, I will say that just like Carl could not judge me just by the movie I picked no film can be judged based solely on the rating given my MPAA.

BTW, Bridesmaids was hilarious and I highly recommend it.  And yes, it really deserves an R rating so don’t take the kids.

  1. You made certain fine points there. I did a search on the topic and found a good number of folks will have the same opinion with your blog.
